A remarkable 103-year-old woman has recently been honored as the oldest female volunteer globally for her dedicated service at a hospital cafe. Beryl Carr, a centenarian residing in London, has been volunteering at the Friends Cafe in Ealing Hospital for over two decades. Remarkably, Beryl began her volunteer work at the age of 80 in 2003, where she assisted in food preparation and served customers.
Expressing her enthusiasm for volunteering, Beryl shared that she finds joy in the social interactions and values the opportunity to contribute to others while enhancing her own well-being. Ann Cousins, who manages the Friends Cafe, commended Beryl for her unwavering commitment and described her as a revered figure within the hospital community, known for her amiable nature and engaging conversations.
Born in 1922 during the reign of George V, Beryl has lived through significant historical events, including surviving the Blitz during World War Two. She actively supported the war effort by sewing barrage balloons and serving as a fire watcher while enduring the challenges of wartime hardships. Beryl met her late husband Bill in 1942, and they enjoyed a 60-year marriage, raising a daughter named Val.
