“Aldi to Open 80 New Stores in £1.6B Expansion”

Aldi has unveiled a plan to launch 80 new stores in the next two years, marking a significant £1.6 billion investment initiative.

Within the upcoming 13 weeks, 21 new stores are scheduled to open in various locations like Shoreditch in London, Durham in the North East, and Kirkintilloch in Scotland. The popular budget supermarket has identified 20 key areas for new site openings, including Bromley, Ealing, South Shields, and Witney.

Currently operating 1,060 stores across the UK, Aldi aims to expand to 1,500 stores. This expansion project is expected to generate numerous job opportunities and enhance collaboration with British suppliers.

In its latest financial report for the 12 months ending December 2024, Aldi disclosed a sales growth to £18.1 billion. Although operating profit decreased to £435.5 million, this was attributed in part to customer price reductions, infrastructure investments, and increased colleague wages.

Aldi has recently lowered prices on over 900 product lines and has invested over £300 million in price reductions since the beginning of 2025, covering items like fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy, and household essentials. Additionally, the supermarket has raised store assistant wages twice this year, with minimum hourly rates set at £13.02 nationally and £14.35 within the M25 area.

Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland’s CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing high-quality products at competitive prices without any membership schemes or hidden costs. Aldi’s mission to expand its reach and accessibility to more communities is driving the record investment of £1.6 billion in the next two years.

Which? recently reaffirmed Aldi as the most cost-effective supermarket, with a survey showing that a basket of 75 items cost an average of £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025. This was 38p cheaper than the same basket at Lidl, which totaled £128.30 on average with its loyalty program, Lidl Plus. The items in the comparison included both branded and own-brand products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
