“Championing Truth: The Mirror’s Legacy on World News Day”

-

Who pays attention to the provision of free school meals for all children in the UK? Who is concerned about securing timely access to an NHS dentist? Who prioritizes harsher penalties for domestic violence perpetrators who cause fatalities? Who advocates for stricter regulations on unscrupulous cosmetic clinics? The answer is clear: we do. The Mirror.

For over a century, we have championed equity, justice, and progress. Following the tragedy of the Titanic, where many of the less fortunate perished needlessly, we spearheaded the call for increased lifeboats. We took a stand against the ivory trade and the brutal practice of seal clubbing, contributing to the establishment of the World Wildlife Fund.

We stood in solidarity with the families of the 97 victims of the Hillsborough disaster until the truth was uncovered. Our initiatives have brought about transformative changes — from the implementation of Max and Keira’s Law regarding organ donation to our annual Pride of Britain Awards, recognizing ordinary individuals accomplishing extraordinary feats.

This is who we are. We report with vigor, fervor, and precision, covering stories of significance in your local communities.

We illuminate instances of injustice, advocate for the marginalized, and embrace risks in the pursuit of truth.

That is why, on World News Day, we are amplifying our voice on the criticality of reliable journalism more than ever before.

In the current landscape, being a journalist is increasingly challenging and perilous. In 2025 alone, 48 journalists have lost their lives, over 70 are missing, and more than 350 are incarcerated simply for speaking the truth.

Simultaneously, journalism in the UK is confronting its own set of threats. Government funding for journalism courses in universities and colleges is dwindling. The dominance of big tech and social media platforms often obscures fact-checked reporting with a deluge of opinions, misinformation, and conspiracy theories. If those seeking to silence journalists prevail, what remains?

A world where truth is suppressed, accountability fades, and the stories vital to you — about your family, your community, your nation — remain untold.

This underscores the significance of trusted journalism — to uncover misconduct, to demand accountability from those in power, to advocate for change, to celebrate exemplary actions, and above all, to uphold the truth.

Therefore, on World News Day, stand with us. Choose Truth. Choose Facts. Choose Journalism.
