Tyler Robinson, 22, the alleged perpetrator in the Charlie Kirk shooting case, was apprehended following advice from his father to surrender to authorities after the FBI released CCTV footage of the suspect. Before his arrest, Robinson reportedly made light-hearted comments to his friends on a Discord server regarding the surveillance image shared by the police, depicting a man in sunglasses and a cap at Utah Valley University post the incident.
Robinson’s friends jokingly pointed out similarities between him and the individual in the CCTV image, unaware of his wanted status. In a Discord chat, one friend tagged Robinson, asking his whereabouts with a skull emoji. Robinson humorously responded, claiming the person resembled him, suggesting it was a look-alike attempting to frame him.
The Discord conversation turned to jests about the shooting incident involving Kirk, with one person sarcastically posting, “Tyler killed Charlie!!!”. Despite a $100,000 reward for information leading to Robinson’s arrest, the group bantered about turning him in, with Robinson even expressing interest in a share of the reward money.
Following his identification as the suspect in the shooting, Robinson was arrested and is currently held without bail. His Discord acquaintances expressed disbelief at the news, questioning its authenticity. Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that Robinson had expressed negative sentiments towards Kirk to family friends, citing his visit to Utah Valley University and disagreement with Kirk’s ideologies.
Robinson’s former classmates provided insights into his character, describing him as a diligent student with potential for success. Jaida Funk, who knew Robinson from elementary and middle school, praised his respectful and intelligent demeanor, highlighting his quiet yet confident nature.
If convicted, Robinson could potentially face the death penalty, as both Governor Cox and President Trump have advocated for capital punishment in this case.
