“Elderly British couple freed by Taliban after 8 months”

-

An elderly British couple, Barbie Reynolds, 76, and Peter Reynolds, 80, who have been long-time residents of Afghanistan, were recently released by the Taliban after being held captive for almost eight months. The couple, who dedicated their lives to serving the nation, were worried about their well-being while in prison. Their family’s relentless efforts to secure their freedom through public appeals have finally paid off, allowing them to board a flight out of the country.

The Reynolds were taken into custody back in February while traveling to their home in Bamyan Province, central Afghanistan. The circumstances surrounding their detention remain unclear. However, following mediation by Qatar, the couple was released from detention and are currently being flown to Doha.

Upon their release, Mrs. Reynolds expressed gratitude for the treatment they received, stating that they are eager to reunite with their children and possibly return to Afghanistan in the future, as they consider themselves Afghan citizens. A Qatari official involved in the case mentioned that the couple, who have resided in Afghanistan for nearly twenty years, will undergo medical assessments before heading to the UK. The negotiations saw the couple being moved from Kabul’s central prison to a larger facility.

Barbie and Peter, who originally met at Bath University, decided to remain in Afghanistan even after the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021. Another individual, Faye Hall, who was detained alongside them, was also released by the Taliban after a shorter captivity period of eight weeks.

Having been married for around five decades and tying the knot in Kabul, the couple is set to be reunited with their family shortly after their release. Their son Jonathan Reynolds had previously expressed concerns about their deteriorating health, urging for their immediate release as their well-being was rapidly declining in detention. He highlighted the harsh conditions his parents faced, including lack of sunlight, limited outdoor access, malnutrition, and health issues like serious convulsions and anaemia.

Following their harrowing ordeal, the Reynolds are finally on their way to safety and a long-awaited reunion with their loved ones.
