“Free TV Licences for Individuals Born in 1950”

-

Individuals born in 1950 might qualify for a complimentary TV licence starting this year.

If you are 75 years old or above and receive Pension Credit, you are eligible for a free TV licence. The current cost of a TV licence is £174.50.

Upon reaching 75 years of age and being a Pension Credit recipient, you can request a refund for any remaining months on your TV licence after your 75th birthday. To qualify for a refund, you must have at least one month left on your TV licence.

A TV licence is necessary for watching or recording live TV, as well as for viewing any content – live or catch-up – on BBC iPlayer. However, a TV licence is not required if you only watch shows on catch-up via streaming services other than BBC iPlayer.

Popular streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5 are exempt from requiring a TV licence. Nevertheless, a TV licence is needed if you watch live TV programs through these streaming platforms.

Failure to possess a TV licence could result in a fine of up to £1,000, or £2,000 in Guernsey.
