A German man met a tragic fate after being bitten and killed by his pet black widow spider, leading to his body being consumed by his other pets in his home resembling a zoo. The horrific discovery took place in 2004 when police entered his small apartment and found Mark Voegel deceased, with various insects and lizards feeding on his remains.
The fatal spider bite was inflicted by Bettina, a black widow with venom far more potent than that of a rattlesnake, cobra, or coral snake. Describing the scene as resembling a horror movie, a police spokesperson recounted the disturbing sight of webs covering Voegel, spiders crawling all over him, and pieces of flesh being carried off by lizards to feed other spiders.
Known as a recluse, Voegel never entertained visitors to his abode in Dortmund, which police likened to a combination of a botanical garden and the eerie setting from “The Silence of the Lambs.” Apart from spiders, Voegel also housed a boa constrictor, various snakes, poisonous frogs, and a gecko named Helmut.
Tragically, Voegel is believed to have passed away one to two weeks prior to being found by authorities, prompted by complaints from neighbors about a foul odor emanating from his residence. The apartment was described as an apocalyptic menagerie due to many cages and terrariums left open, allowing the pets to roam freely.
The apartment emitted an eerie green light and was filled with thousands of termites. Voegel’s lifeless body was discovered on a sofa, covered in extensive cobwebs, with spiders visibly crawling all over him. An expert noted that some of Voegel’s aggressive spiders were comparable to pit bulls in the animal kingdom, expressing concerns about his ability to care for such pets.
