A serious accident on the M4 has resulted in the closure of the main motorway this morning, causing significant delays for drivers during rush hour. The motorway has been shut in both directions near Bridgend due to a vehicle overturning, compounded by another broken down vehicle near the Prince of Wales bridge, leading to chaotic traffic conditions.
South Wales Police have confirmed their presence at the crash site and have advised the public to avoid the area as traffic congestion worsens. National Highways has reported that previously closed lanes on the M4 have now reopened after emergency repair works were completed, resulting in improved traffic flow.
Emergency repair works on the M4 in Gloucestershire have been finished, allowing all lanes to be operational again following an infrastructure issue. However, on the Prince of Wales bridge, two lanes remain closed for emergency infrastructure repairs, causing delays of up to 30 minutes for drivers.
Highways England has announced the reopening of lane 2 on the M4, offering some relief to motorists. The agency has also highlighted significant delays of nearly an hour for drivers on the M4, with normal traffic conditions not expected until later in the morning.
South Wales Police continue to urge the public to avoid the crash area, with lane closures in effect in both directions between Junction 36 for Sarn and Junction 35 for Pencoed. Traffic is rapidly increasing along the M4, particularly between Junction 36 A4061 and Junction 35 A473, as well as on the Prince of Wales bridge from Junction 23 M48 to Junction 22 M49.
