A group of Palestinian children who are ill or injured are being evacuated from Gaza to receive medical treatment in the UK through the NHS. These children are currently under medical care in a neighboring country before being transferred to the UK for further treatment. The UK Government is expediting the process to bring critically ill children from Gaza to receive medical attention due to the deteriorating healthcare system in the region, where access to treatment has become extremely challenging for children with long-term conditions.
Since October 7, 2023, over 50,000 children in Gaza have been either killed or injured, as reported by UNICEF. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that efforts are underway to evacuate these children from Gaza and facilitate their journey to the UK for medical assistance. In addition to the injured children, the UK is also assisting in the evacuation of students who have secured placements at British universities.
Project Pure Hope, a charity established by volunteer medical professionals, has already brought a few children to the UK, but official evacuations require approval from the Israeli Government. This initiative marks the first instance of Palestinian children being brought to Britain for treatment under the NHS, with arrangements made for accompanying family members and the collection of biometric data in a third country.
While the exact number of children in the initial group remains undisclosed, estimates suggest it could range between 30 and 50 children. Opposition leader Keir Starmer previously pledged to aid more sick and injured Palestinian children, condemning the dire situation in Gaza. The UK Government’s recent commitment to establish a program for free medical care in the UK for these children is now being put into action.
Collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Foreign Office is orchestrating the transfer of critically ill children to the UK for specialized NHS treatment, with the first wave of patients expected to arrive shortly.
