Prince Harry’s clandestine visit to see the Duchess of Kent during his swift UK trip was deemed a significant gesture of reconciliation within the royal family, as per an expert’s assessment.
In his brief four-day return to the UK, the Duke of Sussex held a 55-minute private tea with his father, King Charles, at Clarence House, marking their first encounter since February 2024.
Privately, Harry also met another royal family member during his visit, confirming his meeting with Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, at Kensington Palace. This meeting was to offer condolences after the passing of Prince Edward’s wife, Katharine, the Duchess of Kent, who died on September 4 at the age of 92.
Instead of attending the Duchess’ funeral at Westminster Cathedral, Prince Harry traveled to Ukraine for a pre-arranged meeting with wounded soldiers in the conflict-affected region.
By making time to meet with the Duke of Kent, royal expert Jennie Bond suggests that Prince Harry is actively working towards repairing relationships within the royal family.
Bond shared exclusively with the Mirror: “Harry appears keen on retaining his connection to the royal family, although he may not necessarily wish to be part of the institution itself. Family bonds seem to hold great significance for him presently, despite any past conflicts and pain caused.”
Recalling the bond between the Kents and Harry, Bond emphasized the prince’s likely sense of duty to personally extend his sympathies.
She explained, “The Duke and Duchess of Kent played a significant role in his life for many years and were present at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. The Duchess rarely made public appearances, so Harry likely appreciated her presence.”
“It was likely important for him to visit the Duke and offer condolences in person – a gesture that felt natural to him. His actions suggest a desire for reconciliation and demonstrate that he still cares for his relatives, even as his life has taken a different path.”
Although Prince Harry did not attend the Duchess’ funeral on September 16 in London, Jennie Bond believes this decision was made to avoid overshadowing the somber event and to honor his commitment in Ukraine.
Bond noted, “There is no confirmation whether he was invited to the funeral. However, he likely anticipated that media attention would focus on him instead of the Duchess. His prior engagement in Ukraine, which required intricate planning, likely made rescheduling impractical. Ultimately, he chose to privately meet the Duke and allow the family to grieve publicly.”
