A recent report has exposed the alarming situation of Russia’s actions involving around 20,000 children taken from Ukraine. These children are reportedly undergoing military training in various locations, including cadet schools and military bases, as part of a significant deportation effort.
The investigation highlighted over 200 sites where Ukrainian children are being transferred to Russia, with some locations engaging in systematic re-education activities. Military drills, combat training, and the handling of drones and equipment were observed at 40 of these locations.
Ukrainian officials, including Andriy Yermak, expressed shock at the report, emphasizing the vulnerability of children in armed conflicts. They condemned Russia’s actions, accusing them of using Ukrainian children as a tool against Ukraine and Europe.
Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa demanded the immediate return of these children, describing their forced re-education and militarization as a tragic consequence of Russia’s invasion. The investigation, conducted by the Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale School of Public Health, identified a vast network of facilities across Russia holding Ukrainian children.
The report categorized these sites into various types, including cadet schools, military bases, medical facilities, religious sites, and educational institutions. It also highlighted re-education activities promoting pro-Russian narratives at many of these locations, raising concerns about the impact on the children’s beliefs and identities.
