Tributes are being honored for a well-liked former radio personality who went missing while fishing close to a river known for its crocodile population.
Roman Butchaski, an expert angler who hosted a radio show focusing on fishing in Australia, disappeared near Oliva River in November 2023.
According to a coroner’s report released on July 30, the presence of two crocodiles in the vicinity prior to Butchaski’s disappearance led to the belief that he was attacked and consumed by one of these reptiles.
The coroner, Christine Roney, stated, “The absence of any trace of the missing person following an extensive search suggests that he may have entered the water and become a crocodile’s prey.”
“It is highly likely due to the presence of large crocodiles in that part of the river,” she added.
Radio host Ben Fordham paid his respects to Roman, expressing relief that closure had been achieved for his loved ones.
Michael Guest, co-host of The Outdoor and Fishing Show, remarked that the coroner’s conclusions were anticipated and provided a sense of closure to the situation.
A widespread search by land and air was initiated for the veteran radio presenter from Sydney before some of his belongings, including his fishing gear, were discovered by a search party near his vehicle at Bramwell Station, where he failed to return.
Local reports indicated that Butchaski had ventured to fish along the Olive River, a known crocodile habitat, raising concerns about his safety in the area.
Authorities, including Queensland Police, were involved in search efforts when he failed to return, with the Rescue 700 helicopter and additional officers mobilized for the search operation.
