“Ubisoft Closes Halifax Studio After Unionization Vote”

-

Ubisoft’s Halifax studio in Canada has been officially closed by the company, following a recent decision to unionize by its staff. The closure, affecting 71 positions, was communicated through a company-wide email on January 7. Despite the surprise to the team, Ubisoft clarified that the shutdown was part of broader cost-saving and restructuring initiatives, distinct from the unionization vote.

Known for developing Assassin’s Creed Rebellion, a popular free-to-play mobile game, Ubisoft Halifax drew attention when approximately 60 employees joined CWA Canada after a significant majority voted in favor of unionization just a month ago. Ubisoft emphasized that the closure plan predates the union vote and emphasized its support for employees’ right to unionize.

In response to inquiries from VGC, Ubisoft stated that the closure was part of a larger strategic effort to enhance efficiency and reduce costs across the company. The affected team members will receive comprehensive severance packages and assistance in transitioning to new career opportunities.

Carmel Smyth, president of CWA Canada, expressed deep disappointment over the closure, pledging to protect the rights of affected workers legally. The shutdown of Ubisoft Halifax adds to a series of studio closures by the company, including the Leamington studio in the UK and staff reductions in Düsseldorf, Stockholm, and Newcastle last year.

Amidst organizational changes towards a more decentralized model empowering creative teams, Ubisoft’s actions coincide with ongoing speculation about potential acquisitions. Reports indicate that Ubisoft is exploring new investors, with Tencent, a Chinese conglomerate, investing a significant amount to support the launch of Vantage Studios, a subsidiary now responsible for major franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
