An upcoming emergency alert drill scheduled for next week aims to enhance national safety, according to a statement from a Cabinet minister. The drill is set to take place on Sunday, September 7, at 3pm, where millions of phones nationwide will receive a warning message about nearby life-threatening situations.
This exercise, considered one of the most extensive public safety tests in the UK, will involve phones vibrating and emitting a siren-like sound for ten seconds. Additionally, a test message will appear on screens to clarify that the alert is part of a drill, aligning with practices observed in countries like Japan and the USA.
All 4G and 5G devices, regardless of their sound settings, will simultaneously sound the alarm and display a text message explaining the ongoing drill. This will be the second major trial of the system, carefully scheduled for a Sunday afternoon to minimize disruptions to daily routines.
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden, emphasized the significance of the upcoming drill, stating that it will be one of the largest public safety exercises in the UK’s history to ensure the readiness of the Emergency Alerts system in safeguarding the nation.
The Emergency Alerts system, launched in April 2023, has already been activated five times to warn citizens about life-threatening situations. Notably, during Storm Éowyn in January 2025, 4.5 million people in Scotland and Northern Ireland received urgent alerts about extreme weather conditions. Moreover, the system has proven its effectiveness in local emergencies, such as the evacuation of over 10,000 residents in Plymouth following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb.
The Government’s emergency planning team, COBR, will issue the test alert, highlighting the crucial role of rapidly sharing warnings and advice during real emergencies. COBR’s efforts typically operate discreetly behind the scenes but play a vital role in orchestrating a coordinated response to national crises.
