Last weekend, while Labour supporters gathered in Liverpool for their annual conference, our team traveled to Birkenhead under the Mersey. We visited the co-operatively owned Future Yard venue and screened a film from our ‘Island of Strangers’ series for the community involved in its creation.
Collaborating with the individuals behind Refugees Rock, we documented a remarkable initiative that began at a Liverpool climbing wall offering free sessions to local asylum seekers. Amid challenges faced by asylum hotels and refugee services due to Far Right opposition, the compassion and solidarity shown at the Climbing Hangar are uplifting.
Ali, a 21-year-old refugee from Iran, shared his experience of feeling like a “desert island” upon arriving in a new country. Witnessing his transformation from a reserved figure to a young man enjoying moments of joy with his climbing partner reflects the power of support and understanding.
Unfortunately, incidents like the recent attack on a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur highlight attempts to sow fear and division within diverse communities. Graham Stringer, the Labour MP, condemned the attack as an assault on the city’s tolerance and interfaith relationships.
In contrast to divisive actions, the response to threats faced by groups like Asylum Link Merseyside demonstrated a heartening display of unity. Thousands rallied to protect the organization from far-right aggression, emphasizing a message of love and support rather than hostility.
In times of turmoil, cities like Manchester have showcased resilience and unity following tragic events. Acts of kindness and solidarity, such as free rides from Muslim taxi drivers and communal vigils, serve as reminders of the strength found in togetherness.
As we navigate challenges that aim to divide us, initiatives like ‘Island of Strangers’ aim to highlight positive stories within communities. The film captures the journey of individuals like Sev and Ali, showcasing the transformative power of friendship and shared experiences in overcoming adversity.
Released weekly on our Mirror Originals YouTube channel, the ‘Island of Strangers’ films offer inspiring narratives of hope and resilience. The Liverpool film is already available for viewing, showcasing the spirit of unity and compassion in the face of adversity.
