“Utah Prison Infested with Scabies & Mosquitoes Faces High-Profile Murder Case”

-

The Utah State Correctional Facility, known for scabies outbreaks, mosquito infestations, drug smuggling, and violent incidents, could be the future home of Tyler Robinson if he is found guilty of killing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

Robinson, 22, was taken into custody following Kirk’s shooting at Utah Valley University. He is facing charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious harm. Governor Spencer Cox has stated that the state will pursue the death penalty, potentially leading to Robinson’s execution in the prison’s death chamber.

Despite its $1 billion price tag and promises of modern amenities and healthcare, the facility, established in 2022, has gained notoriety for its health issues, insect problems, drug trade, and disorder. A scabies outbreak earlier this year affected 140 inmates, leading to extensive testing, disinfection, and sterilization efforts.

Situated in a wetland area, the prison has struggled with mosquito breeding grounds, requiring lawmakers to allocate funds for pest control. Inmates and staff were swarmed by mosquitoes, prompting the distribution of repellent. However, access to the repellent was restricted in high-security units.

The facility has also faced challenges with drug smuggling, with several visitors arrested for attempting to sneak in illegal substances. Security lapses have been evident, with incidents of assaults on correctional officers leading to the installation of new cameras and safety measures. Staff shortages have further strained operations, forcing the closure of housing units and necessitating the transfer of guards from other facilities.

If convicted, Robinson is likely to spend his remaining days in the facility dubbed as the “Hellhole Jail.” Currently under evaluation for potential risks, he is placed on special observation. Robinson’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
