“6,000 Post Offices at Risk of Closure in Government Overhaul”

-

Nearly 6,000 Post Offices are facing potential closure as part of a significant overhaul initiative, according to a recent Government consultation. The consultation highlighted that almost half of the current 11,500 Post Offices are no longer financially viable, especially those operating part-time or sharing premises with other businesses. The impact of closures would be felt most acutely by elderly residents in rural areas.

The consultation, which closes today, aims to revamp and strengthen the postal network. It includes suggestions to redefine what constitutes a Post Office branch, potentially including “drop and collect” boxes as part of the network.

A Post Office spokesperson stated that there are currently no planned closures and emphasized the importance of maintaining a robust network of branches. Most Post Offices are independently run by postmasters, with some operated by retailers like WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons, and the Co-Op.

The Department for Business indicated a preference to maintain the current size and structure of the Post Office network. The organization is exploring additional services such as pharmacy prescription collection, digital ID services, and business advice at Post Office locations.

Post Office CEO, Neil Brocklehurst, highlighted the need for evolution in response to changing consumer behaviors driven by digital technologies. He emphasized the importance of adapting to meet customer demands and enhance revenue opportunities for postmasters and partners operating within the branch network.
