Terence “Bud” Crawford, the recently crowned undisputed world super middleweight boxing champion, faced a troubling situation when he was stopped by police for suspected reckless driving in Omaha, NE, during the early hours of a Saturday morning.
During the incident, Crawford and his three companions were asked to exit the vehicle at gunpoint after officers noticed a firearm, which was legally owned by one of his associates, on the car’s floor.
The officers immediately recognized Crawford, who was in town to celebrate his 38th birthday and recent victory over Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas, according to the police statement released on Sunday morning by Omaha Mayor John Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.
The police report disclosed that officers observed the vehicle driving recklessly in the downtown area before conducting a traffic stop at Cass Street. Upon finding a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard, all four occupants were instructed to leave the vehicle for safety measures. Crawford, upon verifying his identity, was cited for reckless driving, while one of his security team members was also lawfully carrying a firearm.
Authorities confirmed that all occupants had legal permits to carry firearms, and a police supervisor and lieutenant were called to the scene at Crawford’s request.
Ewing mentioned in his statement that he had spoken with Crawford following the incident, emphasizing the importance of trust between law enforcement and the community. He expressed support for Chief Schmaderer’s internal investigation, aiming for transparency in sharing the findings with the public.
Qasim Shabazz, the head of Crawford’s security team, expressed his concern about the situation, stating that they felt their lives were in danger during the encounter with the police officers.
