“Starmer Pledges Support for Hillsborough Bill”

-

Today, Keir Starmer assured Hillsborough families that he will uphold a significant new bill aimed at preventing future state cover-ups. The Prime Minister met with campaigners, including Margaret Aspinall, whose son James was among the 97 individuals who lost their lives in the Hillsborough tragedy. During a private meeting at Downing Street, he pledged that the proposed legislation, which could lead to criminal sanctions for public officials who provide false information, will remain unchanged as it progresses through Parliament.

Starmer emphasized the importance of the law, stating that despite challenges, it was crucial to maintain its integrity and expedite its passage. He expressed his commitment to Aspinall, whom he has known for a long time, assuring her that the bill would not be diluted.

The families of the 97 Liverpool fans who perished in the Hillsborough disaster have fought for justice for decades. Starmer initially aimed to publish the bill by the tragedy’s 36th anniversary in April. He stressed the determination to see the legislation through, even in the face of obstacles.

Margaret Aspinall voiced hope that the new law would prevent others from experiencing the same pain as the families have endured. She emphasized the broader societal impact of the legislation, highlighting its significance beyond the Hillsborough victims.

The Prime Minister commended the Hillsborough campaigners for their bravery, acknowledging the lasting impact of their efforts on future generations. Concerns raised by some campaigners regarding the bill’s content were addressed by the Government’s confirmation of a legal duty of candour for public officials, ensuring honesty and accountability.

Sue Roberts, who lost her brother in the tragedy, expressed gratitude for the progress made, noting the government’s commitment to seeing the bill through. The developments were described as monumental and a significant step forward in seeking justice for the victims and their families.
