Formula One icon Michael Schumacher, known for his remarkable racing career, now communicates solely through eye movements, a significant change brought about by a tragic skiing accident nearly 12 years ago. Since sustaining a severe brain injury in the French Alps in December 2013, Schumacher has been away from the public eye, with his wife, Corinna, taking charge of his ongoing care.
Initially, there were hopes among many fans for Schumacher’s full recovery, given his status as a seven-time F1 champion. However, the reality of his situation has slowly settled in, indicating that a return to public life may not be possible.
Despite the limitations on visitors to the Schumacher household post-accident, some details about his current state have surfaced. Elisabetta Gregoraci, the former wife of ex-Benetton chief Flavio Briatore, disclosed in 2020 that Schumacher now communicates through eye signals.
Corinna, who has been by Schumacher’s side since their marriage in 1995, has overseen his care with strict regulations on access to the racing legend. Though mostly residing at their Lake Geneva property in Switzerland, the family also spends time at their Mallorca home, acquired in 2017.
In a rare public appearance in September 2024 at his daughter Gina-Maria’s wedding, Schumacher reportedly attended the ceremony at their Mallorca villa. Guests were allegedly asked to surrender their mobile phones to maintain privacy, preventing any leaked images of the former Ferrari superstar.
Despite his absence from the public sphere, Schumacher continues to hold a special place in the hearts of F1 enthusiasts and acquaintances. Jean Todt, his former Ferrari team principal, shared insights into their enduring friendship and the changes in Schumacher’s life post-accident, highlighting the crucial role played by his family in his care.
