“Mother of Late Jay Slater Calls for Stricter ‘Armchair Detective’ Controls”

-

In a poignant update delivered 15 months posthumously, Debbie Duncan, the mother of Jay Slater, has urged for stricter controls on ‘armchair detectives’ following the distress caused by baseless conspiracy theories surrounding her son’s tragic demise.

Jay, an apprentice bricklayer, disappeared at the age of 19 during a vacation in Tenerife with friends. His body was eventually found in a nature reserve on July 15, 2024, bearing injuries indicative of a fatal fall.

Despite the coroner’s ruling of accidental death, Debbie and her family faced relentless online misinformation and trolls. She now advocates for Jay’s Law to prevent the spread of false information about missing persons, with support from local authorities and Mirror readers.

Ahead of the upcoming Channel 4 documentary about Jay, Debbie shared her anguish over the unfounded theories circulating about her son’s disappearance. These included accusations against Jay’s friend and speculative claims linking criminal activities to the case.

Debbie expressed her dismay at the ordeal and emphasized the need for greater sensitivity and respect. She continues to struggle with the loss of Jay, having left her job and sought counseling. Despite the challenges, the family has dedicated funds to honor Jay’s memory and support the repatriation process.

The Disappearance of Jay Slater documentary will premiere on Channel 4 on Sunday, September 28. If you have a story to share, reach out to julia.banim@reachplc.com.
