A woman who was married and claimed to have developed romantic feelings for a vulnerable teenager has been sentenced to jail. The teenager’s mother cried as she read her impact statement during the court proceedings.
Lindy Leah, aged 44, encountered the teenager while he was residing in a care facility in St Helens, Merseyside. She served as the deputy manager at the facility. Accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with the teenager, Leah denied using her position of authority to influence the minor. However, she was found guilty after a trial at Liverpool Crown Court last month.
During the sentencing hearing, Leah, residing on Capesthorne Road in Orford, Warrington, appeared via video link from HMP Styal. Evidence presented in court highlighted how she had sent WhatsApp messages to the teenager, requesting intimate acts and suggesting they spend a drug-fueled night together.
The prosecutor emphasized the severity of the breach of trust, especially considering the vulnerable state of the child under her care. The court was informed that Leah had encouraged the teenager to leave the care facility for a night of questionable activities, indicating a deeper and inappropriate relationship.
The victim’s mother expressed profound distress, explaining the difficulty of placing her son in care and the subsequent realization of his vulnerability to manipulation. She criticized Leah for preying on her son’s emotions, providing him with material goods, and isolating him from his family to maintain control.
Leah, unmoved by the emotional testimonies, was described by her defense as coping with mental health challenges and remorseful for her actions. She pleaded guilty to charges related to drug supply and incitement of a minor. The court sentenced her to 23 months in prison and imposed restraining orders to prevent contact with the victim and his family.
The devastated mother addressed Leah directly, condemning her actions and asserting her own role as the true maternal figure in her son’s life. Despite Leah’s remorse and desire for societal reintegration, the court handed down a firm sentence reflecting the gravity of her offenses.
