Nearly four million individuals have participated in a Parkrun event since its inception with only 13 people twenty years ago. Parkrun offers a free, community-oriented 5k run, walk, or jog every Saturday, and a shorter 2k route for juniors and families the following day. The event is inclusive, welcoming all abilities without time constraints, and provides a tail walker for those at the back of the group.
Joe Wicks, also known as The Body Coach, serves as an ambassador for Brooks Running, an official partner of Parkrun. Having completed the London Marathon twice and recently triumphed in the Great North Run, Wicks has shared five valuable tips for newcomers:
1. Participation is open to everyone, regardless of fitness level. Embracing a gradual approach like run-walk (Jeffing) is encouraged, as the primary focus is on getting active rather than speed.
2. Parkrun offers a consistent schedule for accountability and social interaction, enhancing the overall experience.
3. Apart from physical benefits, engaging in Parkrun can significantly impact mental well-being by providing opportunities to connect with nature and others.
4. Fancy equipment is not a requirement; a simple pair of trainers is all you need to get started, making Parkrun accessible to all at no cost.
5. Setting and achieving personal goals over time boosts confidence and fitness levels, highlighting the importance of consistency and perseverance.
Brooks Running, a renowned brand for high-performance running gear, has enlisted Joe Wicks as their ambassador. Wicks, in alignment with Brooks’ philosophy that running is for everyone, trained with the Brooks Ghost 17 in preparation for the Great North Run.
