Tens of thousands of individuals have been relocated in the Philippines as a powerful typhoon strikes the region. Super Typhoon Ragasa, known locally as Nando, has impacted the northern part of the country with intense winds reaching 270kmph (167mph). Over 10,000 residents were instructed to evacuate their residences and seek refuge in schools and emergency shelters to stay safe from the violent storm.

Weather specialists have issued life-threatening alerts as businesses were compelled to shut down. The World Meteorological Center in Beijing has confirmed the likelihood of “extremely heavy downpours” in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The weather service has also predicted strong winds hitting the Bashi Channel, northern South China Sea, and Beibu Gulf. Areas like southern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand could also experience adverse effects from the typhoon.

Multiple airlines, including Cathay Pacific, have cautioned travelers about potential disruptions, with Cathay Pacific anticipating the cancellation of over 500 flights. The airline announced a temporary halt in passenger flights to and from Hong Kong International Airport due to the impending storm.

Government officials have issued a nationwide warning urging citizens to exercise caution. The Philippines’ Department of the Interior and Local Government emphasized the importance of safety measures, stating, “While homes and property can be reconstructed, lost lives are irreplaceable.”

Experts have highlighted the severe winds anticipated in the South China Sea and neighboring regions due to Typhoon Ragasa. The World Meteorological Center in Beijing projected heavy rainfall in various regions, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, with potential gales and strong winds affecting multiple areas.

One expert has drawn attention to a unique weather phenomenon occurring in a specific province. Hurricane historian Michael Ferragamo described the rare “stadium effect” being experienced by residents on Babuyan Island, Cagayan, as an extraordinary and once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

A video recording captured the destructive impact of the powerful winds on homes in Cagayan, showing trees being toppled by strong gusts amidst torrential rainfall. The severity of the weather conditions obstructed visibility in the video, emphasizing the intensity of the storm.

The airline Cathay Pacific anticipates extensive flight cancellations due to the severe weather conditions. Filipino authorities have issued a detailed explanation of the expected impacts in the capital, Manila, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in the region.

Qantas has also alerted customers to anticipate travel disruptions in Hong Kong, advising passengers to stay updated on flight statuses. Moreover, a striking satellite image has depicted the magnitude of Typhoon Ragasa, illustrating its Category 5 strength and significant impact on the Philippines.

The Philippines’ weather agency has raised concerns about coastal inundation and the risk of life-threatening storm surges in the northern provinces. Over 10,000 individuals have been evacuated from their residences, and schools and offices were closed in preparation for potential flooding and landslides as one of the most potent typhoons of the year threatens the region.
