UK Braces for 75mph Winds & Heavy Rain

-

The Met Office has advised millions of UK residents to prepare for winds reaching speeds of up to 75mph by gathering essential items such as torches. Expect heavy rain, strong winds, and cooler temperatures in the upcoming days, potentially causing disruptions across the country. Wales and parts of England have been issued yellow weather warnings for rain and winds as a new low-pressure system approaches from the southwest.

A rain warning is in effect for Wales, northern, and western England from 9am on Saturday to 3am on Sunday, with expected rainfall between 20-30mm, possibly reaching 60-80mm in certain areas. The wind warning, from 3pm today to 4am tomorrow, indicates strengthening winds moving northeastwards, with gusts of 50-60mph in inland locations and up to 75mph in coastal areas along the Bristol Channel and west Wales coast.

Residents in the warned areas are advised by the Met Office to secure loose items like bins, garden furniture, and tents, and to be cautious while driving, anticipating road disruptions. Coastal residents should be wary of dangerous large waves. Additionally, the forecast suggests a shift to cooler weather after the low-pressure system passes, with a chance of snow on high mountain peaks by the weekend’s end.

As the system moves towards Scandinavia on Sunday, cooler air will flow in from the north, potentially leading to snow on mountain peaks. Rain will gradually clear southeastwards with strong winds and coastal gales, while Scotland may experience patchy rural frost. England and Wales will see cloud cover and light rain moving southward with cooler temperatures and wind chill in the northeast. Next week is expected to be drier with some sunny spells but possible repeated showers in southeast England, accompanied by overnight fog and frost.
