World Afro Day falls on September 15 every year, and in 2024, it aligns with the ‘Fix the Law, Not Afro Hair’ campaign.
Started in 2017 by Michelle De Leon, World Afro Day has expanded from a national event in the UK to a global movement. It now includes a significant gathering in Parliament to celebrate Afro hair and advocate for enduring changes, which includes an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.
The ‘Fix The Law, Not Our Hair’ initiative commenced in 2024 to urge policymakers to address legal gaps that enable hair-based discrimination to persist. Among the supporters was Spice Girl Mel B, who joined thousands in the call for change.
The Mirror covered the Business Leaders event, where activists, celebrities, and community figures convened at the House of Commons for a day of impactful discussions and touching moments. The event, led by Labour MP Liam Conlon, aimed to amplify the voices of those advocating for change, including Michelle De Leon.
Michelle expressed optimism about the potential of the Guinness World Record attempt to unify people globally in a teachable moment about Afro hair. She highlighted the importance of embracing one’s hair and engaging with legislators to ensure its recognition as an essential part of identity.
Ruby Williams, a World Afro Day ambassador, recounted her experiences with hair discrimination during her school years, emphasizing how it affected her education. Rapper Krept also attended to show solidarity and emphasized the importance of normalizing and celebrating Afro hair without explanation.
TV presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford shared her personal journey with her hair, noting how World Afro Day signifies freedom, empowerment, and a safe space for embracing vulnerability to foster strength and unity.
Since its inception, World Afro Day has sparked global discussions on the need to explicitly combat hair-based discrimination under the 2010 Equality Act. Activists stress that a legal reform is overdue.
Supporting World Afro Day, sponsors Paulette Hamilton MP and Liam Conlon MP engaged with Equality Minister Seema Malhotra to push for legislation to safeguard Afro hair.
Liam Conlon MP emphasized the unique nature of hair discrimination and the importance of education in driving cultural shifts for inclusivity, particularly in workplaces.
