“US Basketball Player Faces Death Penalty for Cannabis Gummies in Indonesia”

-

A professional basketball player from the United States is currently facing severe legal consequences in Indonesia for being found in possession of $400 worth of cannabis-infused gummies. Jarred Shaw, a 35-year-old athlete hailing from Dallas, Texas, had his run-in with law enforcement officers five months ago.

Shaw, who had a collegiate basketball career with the Utah State Aggies before moving on to play for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA development league draft of 2015, later pursued his basketball endeavors in various countries such as Tunisia, Argentina, Thailand, Uruguay, and Venezuela. In 2022, he relocated to Indonesia to represent Prawira Bandung, eventually switching to Satria Muda Peramina and then to Tangerang Hawks in 2024.

The arrest of Shaw occurred in May when undercover officers intercepted a package containing 132 cannabis gummies that had been illicitly imported from Thailand. Shaw was apprehended while attempting to retrieve the package from an apartment complex in Tangerang Regency.

Following his arrest, Shaw was dismissed by Tangerang Hawks and received a lifetime ban from the Indonesian Basketball League. However, his legal troubles have escalated significantly due to Indonesia’s stringent anti-drug policies, which include severe penalties such as the death penalty. Shaw, who claims he used the cannabis gummies for medicinal purposes to alleviate the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, expressed his plight and emphasized the therapeutic benefits he derived from cannabis.

Acknowledging his error in judgment, Shaw admitted to feeling isolated and distressed as he awaits his court proceedings while being detained alongside other prisoners. Authorities have indicated that Shaw could potentially face a lengthy prison sentence or even capital punishment if found guilty.

Advocates like Stephanie Shepard from the Last Prisoner Project have highlighted the broader issue of disproportionate punishments for non-violent cannabis-related offenses worldwide, advocating for adherence to international human rights standards in legal proceedings and sentencing.

Efforts to uncover the international drug network connected to Shaw’s case are ongoing, with law enforcement authorities emphasizing the importance of dismantling such networks to prevent the distribution of illicit substances.
