Southport teenager Axel Rudakubana deliberately singled out women and girls during his brutal attack at a children’s dance class, as revealed in a public inquiry. The 17-year-old, known for his disturbing fascination with extreme violence, had raised concerns among his family and teachers. Despite being under the care of mental health services, he was discharged shortly before the tragic incident where three girls lost their lives on July 29 last year.
During the inquiry, it was highlighted that all the victims were females except for one, as pointed out by Nicholas Moss KC, the counsel overseeing the proceedings. The dance class, themed around Taylor Swift, was advertised in a way that would predominantly attract girls. Rudakubana, referred to as “AR,” likely knew the event catered to girls and was organized by women, indicating a deliberate targeting of women and girls in his actions.
The inquiry emphasized Rudakubana’s calculated approach, noting his intent to target a vulnerable group in a setting where he perceived parents would not be present. His cowardly attack resulted in the tragic deaths of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, aged six, seven, and nine, respectively. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of eight children, the class instructor, and two individuals who tried to intervene.
Prior to the attack, Rudakubana had a history of concerning behavior, including referrals to the anti-terror program Prevent, violent incidents at school, and possession of weapons. Investigations also uncovered his online purchases of machetes and knives, alongside dangerous substances like ricin. Disturbing images and content related to violence, terrorism, and extremist figures were found in his possession, indicating a troubling mindset leading up to the tragic events.
While no specific religious or terrorist motives were uncovered, the victims’ families are seeking clarity on how this determination was made. The inquiry, led by Sir Adrian Fulford, is committed to providing answers and ensuring transparency for those affected by the devastating attack. The proceedings are ongoing at Liverpool Town Hall.
