Keir Starmer is set to declare the recognition of Palestinian statehood by Britain today. The announcement, initially pledged in July if the Gaza situation did not improve, is expected to be made by the Prime Minister on Sunday.
Recent developments have led Downing Street to conclude that the conditions have deteriorated significantly, with distressing images of violence, hunger, and hardship becoming unbearable. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy will formally present the recognition to the United Nations on Monday.
In a previous statement in July, Starmer had called for immediate actions from Hamas, including the release of hostages, agreeing to a ceasefire, disarmament, and a commitment to refrain from involvement in Gaza’s governance. These demands remain unchanged.
Contrary to reports suggesting a delay until after Donald Trump’s state visit, Starmer clarified during a press conference that the timing was not related to the visit. He emphasized that Hamas, being a terrorist organization, has no place in Palestine’s future governance.
Starmer highlighted the gravity of recent events, expressing solidarity with Israel and firmly asserting that Hamas opposes peace and a two-state solution. He also mentioned discussing the recognition timing with the president, emphasizing mutual respect and understanding between leaders.
