-

A heroic Ukrainian medical professional, who endured harsh treatment while in Russian custody, is urging Russia to be held accountable. Yuliia Paievska, known for establishing a volunteer ambulance group called “Taira’s Angels” in Ukraine, recorded distressing bodycam footage before being captured by pro-Russian forces in the besieged city of Mariupol during the invasion in 2022. After three months of captivity, she now focuses on supporting the mental well-being of Ukrainian military personnel. In a moving interview with the Mirror, Yuliia, also known as Taira, shared the challenges she has faced.

During a visit to London, she expressed her belief in justice and the need for Russia to fully compensate for the immense suffering caused. Drawing parallels to historical events, she highlighted the similarities between the current situation in Ukraine and the aftermath of World War Two. Yuliia emphasized the necessity of halting Russian aggression to minimize further casualties.

Captured in March 2022 following Vladimir Putin’s assault, Yuliia endured torture and emphasized the psychological and physical torment inflicted during her captivity. Bodycam footage captured before her capture showcased her bravery in aiding both Ukrainian and Russian casualties. Yuliia, who was released in June 2022, was set to participate in the Invictus Games that year but was captured, leading her daughter to compete on her behalf.

Yuliia, a graphic designer turned volunteer medic and military officer, remains dedicated to providing aid without weapons or violence through Taira’s Angels. She continues to serve in the military, offering crucial mental health support to frontline troops. Her firsthand experiences of war, captivity, and torture have equipped her with a unique perspective to assist individuals returning from conflict zones.

Yuliia’s commitment to humanitarian efforts was highlighted at the opening of the Indomitable Ukraine exhibition in London, where she shared her insights. Recently rejoining the military as a mental health officer, Yuliia’s personal experiences have shaped her approach to therapy, offering invaluable support to those affected by war-related trauma.
