A recent study by Scottish Widows reveals that more than half of individuals now possess over two workplace pension funds. Additionally, nearly 9% of people are unsure about the number of workplace pension pots they hold, and 23% express an intention to merge their pension pots but are uncertain about the process.
A music teacher named Michael Bryans, 38, residing in Dumfries, Scotland, was unaware of the total amount in his retirement savings when offered the opportunity to consolidate his pensions upon changing jobs. Initially holding two pension accounts, one valued at £20,768 and the other at £412, Bryans advises others to commence planning for retirement sooner rather than later.
Statistics from the Pensions Policy Institute indicate that approximately £31.1 billion is dormant in unclaimed, inactive, or misplaced pensions, with an average fund size of £9,469.
Bryans shared his experience with The Mirror, stating, “About two years ago, I switched jobs, and that’s when I learned about the option to consolidate some of my pensions, which kick-started the process. It was a bit complex as each pension fund had its own procedures and methods.”
He emphasized the importance of persistence and prompt action in pension consolidation, highlighting the benefits of streamlining all pensions into one account for easier management.
Before consolidating pension funds, seeking independent financial advice is crucial. While consolidation reduces administrative tasks, it is vital to compare charges and potential exit fees of old pensions with the new one. Additionally, individuals should assess if any valuable benefits from existing pensions, like guaranteed annuity rates, would be forfeited.
Bryans continues his search for pension pots from past part-time work and has initiated contributions to a private pension to enhance his retirement provisions.
