A former Metropolitan Police officer, Jake Cummings, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for raping two women. The 26-year-old was also convicted of coercive controlling behavior, voyeurism, and stalking. The judge deemed Cummings “dangerous” and specified that he must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before parole consideration.
The case against Cummings began when a victim reported the incidents to the police in February 2024. Subsequently, another woman came forward with similar accusations after learning about the case through media reports. A third victim was identified by investigators through the examination of Cummings’ phone. All three women had been involved in separate relationships with the ex-police officer over a span of four years.
At St Alban’s Crown Court, Cummings received a 16-year sentence with an additional two-year extension for multiple offenses. The jury found him guilty of coercive controlling behavior, voyeurism, and rape in a retrial. He also admitted to stalking charges and was convicted of a third count of the same offense by the jury.
During the sentencing, Judge Bilal Siddique highlighted the consistent pattern of abuse Cummings inflicted on his victims. He mentioned the extensive contact Cummings maintained with the victims, noting that some interactions occurred during his shifts as a police officer.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Cummings subjected his victims to various forms of abuse, including isolation from their social circles and psychological harm. The judge characterized Cummings’ actions as part of a sustained campaign of abuse that lasted nearly five years.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Cummings used technology to exert control over his victims, with thousands of one-sided messages exchanged in a single month. The women, aged between 19 and 24, from different regions, shared similar accounts of harassment and manipulation by Cummings.
Detective Inspector Dale Mepstead expressed admiration for the victims’ bravery in coming forward and helping secure justice. He emphasized the emotional impact on the victims and praised their courage in speaking out. Detective Constable Ellie Cowling stressed the importance of victims reporting such crimes and reassured the public that law enforcement agencies are dedicated to supporting and pursuing justice for victims of abuse.
The verdict against Cummings serves as a warning to potential offenders and underscores the commitment of law enforcement to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
