“Next Trials Advanced AI Scanners for Concealed Items”

-

Next is currently trialing advanced AI scanners capable of identifying stolen items concealed within undergarments such as bras and underwear. The technology operates by detecting alterations in body temperature and can also identify hidden weapons, explosives, cash, and drugs.

The cutting-edge “Thruvision Passive Terahertz Screening System” has undergone testing at Next UK warehouses and distribution centers and may soon be implemented in retail stores. Steve Teatum, the Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the innovative system on a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast.

Teatum highlighted how the technology has been pivotal in uncovering individuals attempting to hide merchandise on their person, a practice known as ‘Mules.’ He emphasized that the AI scanners have significantly enhanced security measures by exposing items concealed in sensitive body areas that traditional screening methods struggle to detect.

Amid a surge in shoplifting incidents in England and Wales, official data revealed a 20% increase in offenses, reaching the highest recorded level in over two decades. In response to rising theft concerns, Home Bargains has collaborated with tech companies SAI and Everseen to install AI cameras at self-checkouts to combat theft by identifying unscanned items.

These advanced cameras are designed to detect instances of “misscans” and “skip scans” at self-checkouts, alerting staff to discrepancies where items are not properly scanned or included in the total purchase. Home Bargains’ operations director, Paul Rowland, commended the effectiveness of the technology compared to traditional security measures.

The implementation of AI-driven solutions in retail settings aims to curb shoplifting incidents and enhance theft prevention strategies. Notably, Home Bargains has also introduced a confidential hotline for customers to report shoplifting and criminal activities at their stores, underscoring their commitment to maintaining a secure shopping environment.
