“Government Warns of Scams Targeting Benefits Recipients”

-

The government has issued a nationwide security alert to millions of individuals, particularly those receiving means-tested benefits, due to reported losses from their bank accounts. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) is advising caution in the upcoming months to prevent falling victim to scams.

Commencing today, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will dispatch letters to eligible recipients nationwide, notifying them of a £150 reduction on their energy bills under the government’s 2025/26 Warm Home Discount initiative. The allocated funds will be sent directly to energy suppliers to reduce the financial burden on qualifying households, rather than being disbursed to individuals.

Despite the positive initiative, scammers are actively attempting to deceive people into believing they must apply for the Warm Home Discount and that they will receive the £150 directly. These fraudsters aim to extract bank details, ultimately stealing money instead of providing the promised rebate.

The DESNZ stresses that there is no application process required for the scheme. A spokesperson highlighted that any text or email claiming otherwise is a fraudulent attempt.

This winter, an additional 2.7 million households will become eligible for the Warm Home Discount, totaling over six million households benefiting from reduced energy bills. Most households will automatically receive the £150 discount.

For residents in England or Wales, the electricity supplier will automatically apply the discount to the bill. An updated list of participating energy suppliers can be found on gov.uk, and eligible individuals should anticipate receiving a notification letter.

Letters will be sent out from mid-October and may continue until December. If no letter is received by January or if the rebate is not credited to the energy account, individuals meeting the criteria should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline, which will be operational starting late October.

In 2024, UK scams resulted in a significant loss of £11.4 billion, with victims losing an average of £1,400 each, as reported by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA). The impact of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) related scams on financial losses varies, with reported figures often not reflecting the true extent of losses.

While exact figures for benefit-related fraud remain elusive, reports from 2019 suggest that criminals may have gained millions through Universal Credit scams, affecting thousands of individuals. The DWP continues its efforts to combat fraudulent claims, including those linked to identity theft, aiming to reduce overall fraud and errors.

A DESNZ spokesperson cautioned against fraudulent attempts, emphasizing that there is no need to apply for the scheme in England or Wales. Individuals are advised to be cautious of unsolicited texts and emails and to await confirmation letters between October and December for the £150 electricity bill discount. Precautions should be taken to avoid clicking on links in suspicious communications.
