“Massive Sinkhole Swallows Cars in Bangkok Chaos”

-

Chaos erupted in Bangkok as a massive sinkhole, measuring 50 meters deep, suddenly appeared on the streets, engulfing several cars.

The incident occurred this morning when a significant portion of the road caved in, creating a large hole and prompting the evacuation of nearby residents. According to Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt, the collapse is believed to be linked to the construction activities for an underground train station in the vicinity.

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, but the collapse resulted in the destruction of three vehicles and caused substantial disruptions to traffic for several hours. Videos capturing the dramatic event show the road’s surface gradually sinking, pulling down electricity poles and damaging water pipes in the process.

The situation remains precarious as authorities have issued warnings that heavy rainfall, typical of Thailand’s current monsoon season, could exacerbate the damage. One side of the 164-foot hole came to a halt just in front of a police station, exposing the underground structure. As a precaution, a nearby hospital announced the suspension of outpatient services for a two-day period.

In 2024, Bangkok claimed the title of the world’s most visited city, a surge in popularity attributed to the filming of the third season of White Lotus by HBO in the city. Euromonitor International’s World’s Top 100 City Destinations report revealed that 32.4 million visitors flocked to the destination.

Mr. Sittpunt stated, “We are closely monitoring the damage and working to fill the gap swiftly,” noting that “the situation has somewhat stabilized, although minor shifting may continue.” City officials confirmed that the hospital’s structural integrity remained intact but ordered evacuations from the police station and adjacent buildings.

Footage captured the tense moments as cars attempted to retreat while the sinkhole expanded, with pedestrians scrambling away before the road completely collapsed, severing the four-lane thoroughfare. Meanwhile, across Asia, preparations are underway for Super Typhoon Ragasa, also known as the “king of storms.”

Following a devastating 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Thailand, particularly Bangkok, the city is still in recovery mode. The earthquake razed high-rise buildings to rubble, sending thick clouds of dust into the air over the capital.

The seismic activity, followed swiftly by a powerful 6.2 magnitude aftershock, inflicted extensive damage, including the collapse of a temple where worshippers had gathered, resulting in fatalities. The estimated casualties range from 10 to potentially 100,000, with thousands feared trapped beneath the debris of collapsed buildings. Emergency responders have launched a large-scale rescue operation to locate and save any survivors.
