Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of dealing with online congestion when trying to access the internet. Typically, this issue occurs during the evening hours when many households are simultaneously engaging in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video chatting with friends.
In contrast, daytime hours witness faster and more reliable download speeds due to fewer people being online at home. However, as the evening sets in and more households connect to the internet after work, local networks can get overwhelmed, leading to noticeable slowdowns in internet speeds.
To explain, broadband operates akin to a motorway where increased traffic results in slower movement. This is why many households experience a significant decline in performance between 7pm and 11pm.
A recent study by Broadband Genie has highlighted the UK areas most impacted by peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top. According to the report, broadband users in Wigan witness a drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease.
Other areas significantly affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).
Not all parts of the UK face evening slowdowns; some areas actually experience improved performance during peak hours. Newport emerged as the best-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.
Broadband Genie explained, “Similar to traffic congestions on roads, internet networks can also experience congestion. We analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to pinpoint locations where broadband performance fluctuates the most during peak times. Customers in Wigan saw the largest drop, with speeds decreasing by 55% during busy hours.”
The report also shed light on regional variations across the UK. Scotland ranked highest overall, showing enhanced broadband performance in the evenings. Wales and the East of England also demonstrated good performance.
Conversely, the South West ranked at the bottom, experiencing around a 15% decline in average speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.
Broadband experts recommend various ways for households to enhance their home connections, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media suggest regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
