A man had to witness a disturbing racial assault on his wife via a video call on FaceTime. Pete Moffat, 55, observed the appalling incident as his wife Evelyn Leitizia faced abuse from a group of masked individuals.
Evelyn, hailing from Bali, Indonesia, was out in Glasgow with female family members on September 12 when a group of masked troublemakers approached her. The thugs encircled Evelyn, 41, making threatening gestures and hurling racial slurs, causing distress to the women. Pete expressed deep sorrow, stating that witnessing his wife’s ordeal left him shattered and embarrassed to be Scottish.
A video of the incident captured the group taunting Evelyn and her family, with one individual mentioning a machete and another threatening to harm them. Evelyn recounted the ordeal, mentioning the verbal abuse and threats made by the group, including gestures with a bottle.
Describing the incident as a hate crime, Evelyn emphasized the sickening racist abuse her family endured and stressed the need to address such behavior. Pete voiced concern over the increasing racism in Scotland, attributing it to a rise in far-right ideologies and anti-immigration sentiments influencing youth.
Both Pete and Evelyn expressed fear for their teenage sons following the traumatic experience. Stand up to Racism Scotland (SUTR) condemned the rise in racist violence, expressing solidarity with the family and denouncing the hateful acts.
