The labor union representing WestJet’s flight attendants has disclosed the specifics of the recent tentative agreement struck with the Calgary-based airline following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) outlined key components of the deal, which entail an over 18% salary increase spread across three years and the introduction of a new “duty period premium” for ground-related work compensation. Additionally, the agreement encompasses enhanced leave entitlements, elevated provisions for food and uniform allowances, and other benefits.
With 4,400 flight attendants on the brink of a strike, WestJet was forced to ground flights across a significant portion of Canada during a lengthy holiday weekend. However, a resolution was swiftly reached between the airline and the union in the early hours of Monday, leading to a gradual resumption of normal airline operations.
The forthcoming step involves a voting process among the cabin crew members to ratify the proposed deal in the upcoming weeks.
