“Canada Aims for Olympic Flag Football Slots in Germany”

-

With the introduction of flag football into the Olympic lineup, Canada is one of the nations aiming to secure early slots for the 2028 Los Angeles Games at the ongoing world championships in Germany. The competition will determine two spots in both the men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments, each comprising only six teams. The United States, a dominant force in flag football, automatically qualifies as the host, leaving three spots per gender to be contested in a two-stage qualifier scheduled for June 2028 in Montreal.

While success at the current world championships is not mandatory for Olympic qualification, it would certainly be advantageous to secure a spot and avoid the pressure of the last-chance qualifier in the following years.

The tournament format involves 16 teams in each gender category, grouped into four for the preliminary rounds. Following these initial matches on Thursday and Friday, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage starting on Saturday. The decisive medal games, determining the world champions and Olympic qualifiers, will take place on Sunday.

In terms of Canada’s schedule, the women’s team kicks off against Panama at 2 a.m. ET on Thursday, followed by a match against Brazil at 8:15 a.m. ET. The women’s group stage concludes on Friday at 4:30 a.m. ET with a game against Japan. The Canadian men’s team faces Austria on Thursday at 5:45 a.m. ET, and then plays Japan on Friday at 2 a.m. ET. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal from the group, Canada receives a default win in their final group match.

The Canadian women’s team holds the fourth spot globally, trailing Mexico, the United States, and Great Britain. Despite previous victories in 2010 and 2014, Canada has not reached the final four since 2018. On the other hand, the Canadian men’s team, ranked 10th, last clinched a world title in 2008 and has not secured a medal since then.

As flag football debuts in the 2028 Olympics, there were speculations about NFL and CFL stars participating for the U.S. and Canada. However, the difference between flag and tackle football became evident during a men’s flag exhibition tournament in L.A., where NFL superstars faced challenges against flag football experts. Notably, Canada’s national teams include former NFL and CFL players, enhancing their competitive edge at the world championships.

For those interested in watching the flag football world championships, the event will be broadcast live on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website, commencing on Thursday at 2 a.m. ET.
