University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah may not have a Nobel Prize under his belt, but he proudly holds an Ig Nobel laureate title. The Ig Nobels, a lighthearted spin on the esteemed Nobel Prizes, commend the most unconventional and inventive studies in academia.
Thurairajah and his team clinched this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on creating a urinal that minimizes splashing. He vividly recalls the moment his mentor, fluid dynamics expert Zhao Pan, shared the exciting news with him.
The group designed and tested various urinal prototypes in their pursuit of the perfect, splash-free model, such as the sleek Nautilus and the angular Cornucopia. Thurairajah emphasized the Nautilus as the superior choice due to its reduced splash and easier maintenance compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, draped in bright yellow raincoats, the researchers were prepared for accolades from their fellow quirky scientists. Despite the whimsical nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical importance of their work in enhancing public restroom facilities.
Their study results, featured in the journal PNAS Nexus, exemplify the value of improving public spaces for societal benefit. Additionally, at the same event, other Canadian researchers were honored for their investigations into topics like unethical behavior, mosquito proboscis-based 3D printing, and peculiar experiments on soil decomposition.
The Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, organized by Annals of Improbable Research, transitioned to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa constraints. Thurairajah, alongside his international team, highlighted the significance of a global scientific community and the importance of inclusivity in such events.
