In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing to monitor fish populations in the Margaree River. This method involves using an electric current to temporarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before releasing them back into the river.
Michael Fabiano, the conservation co-ordinator of the association, stated that electrofishing operations run from May to late September, with a mortality rate of two percent among the thousands of fish handled each season. Prioritizing fish safety, Fabiano emphasized that electrofishing is avoided when water temperatures are too high.
To ensure the safety of the fish and crew members, the electric current is set at levels that cause fish to briefly roll over, and team members wear protective gear such as heavy rubber gloves and chest waders. No serious electric shocks have been reported among crew members during Fabiano’s tenure with the group.
Crews conduct surveys along the 120-kilometre river to pinpoint the most productive streams and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The catch primarily consists of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional findings of eels and lampreys. This season, the association has captured and released approximately 1,800 fish across nine streams, a decrease from the previous year.
According to Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, the intensified scientific research was prompted by reduced data collection efforts by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the association sought dependable data to monitor river health amidst changing climate conditions.
To bridge the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to acquire electrofishing equipment. While traditional fish counting methods involve swimming the river, MacNeil highlighted that electrofishing provides more precise data on juvenile fish populations within specific territories.
The association’s efforts aim to ensure accurate monitoring of river health and fish populations in response to environmental shifts and the challenges posed by diminishing government data collection initiatives.
