Various public figures and officials condemned the decision, alleging government interference. Disney suffered significant financial losses as fans terminated their subscriptions in solidarity. The Walt Disney Company’s stock plummeted by 2.39%, amounting to a $4.99 billion decrease in market value between September 17 and early Tuesday.
During his show’s comeback, Kimmel emphasized the importance of resisting government control over television content. He acknowledged the futility of attempting to change opinions, stating, “If you like me, you like me; if you don’t, you don’t.”
While receiving applause from his audience and accolades for his speech, some criticized Kimmel’s return as a display of double standards.
Roseanne Barr faced a similar fate in 2018 when she was removed from her show for a tweet targeting former Obama official Valerie Jarrett. Barr later apologized for her inappropriate remarks.
Barr, now speaking out against Kimmel, expressed feeling marginalized and criticized what she perceived as a selective application of standards. She commended Nexstar for preempting Kimmel’s show and praised independent media for diversifying information dissemination in the country.
