Michelle Tolley was elated when she received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy efforts, but there was an unexpected twist awaiting her. The 60-year-old, who humorously refers to herself as “59 plus one,” has dedicated herself to seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow activists Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, was honored with a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain ceremony. During the event, while watching midwife Agnes Nisbett receive a prize, it was revealed that all winners, including Michelle, would be gifted a cruise holiday by P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the awards.
The news came as a delightful surprise to Michelle, who has battled health issues for years and tirelessly supported fellow victims while holding the government accountable. Infected with hepatitis C after a blood transfusion in 1987, Michelle endured years of illness before being properly diagnosed and treated.
Turning her anger into positive action, Michelle established a support group, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and provided testimony at the official government inquiry. After decades of advocacy, the prospect of a relaxing cruise holiday was a welcomed respite for Michelle and her husband, who hadn’t traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984.
Their Canary Islands cruise, booked for May, coincided with their 40th wedding anniversary, leading Michelle to contemplate renewing their vows. P&O Cruises, upon hearing her plans, organized a vow renewal ceremony, complete with flowers, photography, and special meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle, with limited sailing experience, was awestruck by the amenities and activities onboard. She and Dean relished every moment, from the dining options to exploring Madeira and the Canary Islands, opting for tours by taxi, tuk-tuk, and river boat.
Their adventures continued in Las Palmas and Lisbon, where they immersed themselves in local culture and history through guided tours. Enthralled by the experience, Michelle and Dean are eager to repeat their cruise holiday, praising the exceptional service, delectable cuisine, and friendly staff.
Reflecting on their voyage, Michelle encourages others to embark on a cruise holiday, emphasizing the fantastic facilities and warm hospitality that made their trip unforgettable.
