“Amazon Web Services Outage Disrupts Internet Giants”

-

Numerous websites and applications are currently experiencing disruptions due to a widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage today. AWS, a key provider of digital infrastructure, is facing technical difficulties, causing a significant impact on various online services.

Impacted platforms include popular services like Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, Sky, and leading UK banks such as Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, along with the HMRC website. AWS has acknowledged the issue’s root cause and reported that most services are gradually returning to normal operation. They stated, “We are witnessing recovery across a majority of affected AWS Services, including global services dependent on US-EAST-1, which have now been restored. Our team is actively working towards complete resolution and will share updates as they become available.”

In a recent update, AWS mentioned, “We have identified a potential root cause for error rates affecting DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region. Our investigation indicates a DNS resolution issue with the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1, impacting other AWS Services in the same region. This problem may also affect global services reliant on US-EAST-1 endpoints like IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables.”

Downdetector recorded a notable surge in outage reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 incidents related to AWS. An HMRC spokesperson highlighted the ongoing challenges with accessing their online services due to the AWS disruptions, advising customers to attempt later or for non-urgent matters. Similarly, a representative from Lloyds Bank expressed regret over the service interruptions caused by AWS problems and requested patience while they strive to restore full functionality.
