Android users are urged to exercise caution when installing new apps as cybercriminals are targeting the platform with a malicious bug named “Kaleidoscope.” Malwarebytes has identified over 100 apps containing this threat, with millions of downloads already recorded.
The attack involves cyber thieves distributing counterfeit versions of legitimate apps from the Google Play Store. Once installed, these fake apps display unskippable ads, causing frustration for users.
The deceptive nature of the attack results in advertisers unknowingly funding these ads, while users are bombarded with unwanted messages. To combat this, Malwarebytes advises users to follow five key tips to avoid falling victim to ad fraud-related malware:
1. Download apps only from the Google Play Store.
2. Pay attention to app permissions, especially regarding “Display over other apps.”
3. Be cautious of granting notification display permissions to suspicious ad sites.
4. Keep your Android device protected with updated security software.
By following these precautions, users can safeguard their devices against the threat of intrusive and unremovable advertisements.
