“Boris Johnson’s Declining Leadership Amid Covid-19 Inquiry”

-

Boris Johnson now appears less dynamic compared to his earlier days as the leader when the pandemic hit the UK. Previously viewed as a relatable Prime Minister with a casual approach, his lack of attention to details did not hinder his popularity. However, recent revelations during the Covid-19 Inquiry suggest he may have been ill-suited for the challenges faced.

During the inquiry, Boris Johnson acknowledged the slow realization within his government about the severity of Covid-19. Facing probing questions about the delayed preparations for school closures and remote learning, he admitted to the government’s initial lack of awareness. The abrupt closure of schools in March 2020 highlighted the unpreparedness that had detrimental effects on children’s development, especially those in disadvantaged circumstances.

The inquiry revealed a lack of planning for remote learning until February 2020, just before the sudden decision to close schools in mid-March. Johnson, visibly worn down by the persistent questioning, struggled to recall specific details and relied on vague recollections when pressed for answers.

Observers noted a change in Johnson’s demeanor, as he appeared physically diminished and fatigued compared to his earlier days in office. Despite attempts to distance himself from public scrutiny, he faced the raw anger of those affected by his government’s decisions, with accusations of negligence and calls of “shame” and “liar.”

The public gallery, including parents of children suffering from long-term effects of Covid-19, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of school reopenings without adequate safety measures. The outcome of the inquiry, to be delivered by Chair Baroness Heather Hallett, may already be foreseen by many disillusioned members of the public.

The evolving narrative surrounding Boris Johnson’s leadership during the pandemic continues to shape public opinion, reflecting a growing sentiment of disappointment and distrust towards the government’s actions.
