Chancellor Rachel Reeves is reportedly considering a reduction in the annual cash ISA allowance from £20,000 to £10,000 in the upcoming Autumn Budget. The move aims to encourage more investment in the stock market to boost economic growth.
Initial speculations hinted at a potential decrease in the cash ISA limit to as low as £4,000, causing concerns among building societies. These institutions argue that altering the cash ISA limit could negatively impact savers and potentially lead to higher mortgage costs, as they heavily rely on cash ISA deposits for lending purposes.
Recent data indicates that around 9.9 million cash ISA accounts were active in 2023/24. While the Treasury has not made any official announcements regarding changes to the cash ISA, any updates are expected to be disclosed during the Budget presentation on November 26.
Notably, financial expert Martin Lewis advised savers to stay vigilant and not make hasty decisions, emphasizing that no changes have been confirmed yet. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a cautious approach until further details are released.
In the realm of savings accounts, various options like easy-access accounts and fixed-rate accounts offer different benefits and restrictions. For instance, easy-access accounts allow withdrawals at any time, while fixed-rate accounts limit access until the end of the term.
Currently, the top easy-access cash ISA rate stands at 4.51% from Trading 212, with a bonus for new customers included. On the other hand, Vida Savings offers the best one-year fixed cash ISA rate at 4.28%.
Furthermore, beyond cash ISAs, other savings accounts like regular saving accounts and fixed-rate accounts provide competitive interest rates, albeit with specific monthly savings limits. Principality Building Society, for instance, offers an 8% fixed rate for six months on savings up to £200 a month in their regular saving account.
