An HGV driver, distracted by explicit content on his phone, caused a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a father of two in a motorway collision, according to court testimony. Neil Platt, 43, was viewing inappropriate images on social media just before the tragic incident near junction four of the M58 in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, on May 17 of the previous year. The driver failed to observe the stationary traffic in front of him and collided with a Hyundai Kona vehicle owned by Danny Aitchison, 46, leading to a devastating chain reaction.
During the trial at Preston Crown Court, it was revealed that Platt had been consistently engaged with his phone while driving from Dumfries, Scotland, along the M6 and onto the westbound M58. Judge Ian Unsworth KC condemned Platt’s reckless behavior, stating that his flagrant disregard for road safety and the law was appalling. The court heard that Platt was preoccupied with various apps like X, TikTok, and YouTube, which ultimately culminated in the tragic collision with Mr. Aitchison’s vehicle.
Platt, a resident of Bootle, Merseyside, admitted guilt to causing Mr. Aitchison’s death and received a 10-year prison sentence. Following his release, he will be prohibited from driving for seven years. The fatal crash occurred shortly before 1 pm after authorities had implemented a roadblock due to a pedestrian sighting on the motorway. Despite being only meters away from the stationary traffic, Platt braked too late, resulting in the fatal collision.
Judge Unsworth emphasized that while there was no evidence of Platt actively searching for explicit content before the crash, his fixation on social media over road safety was evident. Platt’s defense lawyer, Stephen McNally, portrayed his client as remorseful and highlighted the tragic consequences of distracted driving, even for experienced individuals. Platt, a veteran HGV driver, expressed deep regret for the irreversible damage caused by his actions.
Family members of the victim, including his partner Kerry and mother Jeanette Aitchison, expressed profound grief and devastation over the loss of Danny Aitchison. Describing him as the pillar of their family and a beloved figure in their lives, they mourned the irreplaceable void left by his untimely death. Andrew Aitchison fondly remembered his brother as a charismatic presence, emphasizing the emotional turmoil of delayed funeral arrangements due to identification procedures.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of distracted driving and the importance of prioritizing road safety over distractions.
