“Explorer Discovers Frozen 90s Time Capsule McDonald’s in Alaska”

-

A seasoned traveler recently stumbled upon an abandoned McDonald’s in a remote area of the United States. Chris, an American travel enthusiast aiming to explore every country globally, shared a video on social media showcasing his exploration of the deserted restaurant.

Located in Adak, Alaska, this McDonald’s branch ceased operations in 1994. Despite some areas being boarded up, the iconic red, sloping roof of the 1990s era still identifies the restaurant. Lush overgrown grass surrounds the property, yet the building and the drive-thru menu board displaying prices have endured the test of time.

Originally constructed in 1986 to cater to the residents of a military base in Adak that once housed 6,000 people at its peak, the McDonald’s outlet closed down when the base shut in the 1990s. The footage also reveals dilapidated suburban houses in the vicinity.

Chris remarked, “Everything from the exterior to the drive-thru windows at this McDonald’s remains virtually untouched, like a time capsule.” He pointed out that a Big Mac used to cost $2.45 (£1.82) while customers could collect Happy Meal toys themed on the 1990s American children’s TV show, Bobby’s World.

The menu also listed Chicken McNuggets at $2.35 (£1.74), a Filet-O-Fish burger at $1.95 (£1.44), a cheeseburger at $1.09 (81p), and a hamburger for just $0.99 (73p). Breakfast Burritos were priced at $1.49 (£1.10) and Egg McMuffins at $1.95 (£1.44).

Described as the “loneliest McDonald’s in the world” due to its isolated location between Alaska and Russia, reaching this spot requires a four-hour bi-weekly flight from Anchorage. Chris found the eerie nostalgia of the 1990s intriguing at this peculiar site.

His TikTok video has amassed 587,700 views, 16,600 likes, and over 100 comments to date. Viewers expressed nostalgia for the pricing board and menu. Some users highlighted the relatively high prices at the time, attributing it to the cost of living in Alaska.

Commentators also remarked on the well-preserved appearance of the abandoned McDonald’s, noting the intact signage and closure boards as a reflection of the surrounding community. The retro color scheme of the menu board was particularly noted for its nostalgic appeal.
