Gen Z Dreamers: From Spain to the UK – A Personal Journey

-

Many in my generation, known as Gen Z, have aspirations of relocating abroad and experiencing a lifestyle akin to what is often portrayed in movies.

Interestingly, having lived abroad for an extended period now, I find myself frequently reminiscing about my time in Spain and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to return. Seeking a British equivalent of the ‘American Dream’, my parents made a significant decision 11 years ago to uproot our lives from the quaint town of Empuriabrava in Costa Brava, Spain, and embark on a 14-hour journey to London, the capital of the UK.

During my teenage years at 14, my primary concerns revolved around socializing with friends after school and indulging in the typical rebellious lifestyle common among Spanish teens.

The British way of life eluded me; perhaps I missed the memo on the post-school tradition of rushing to the ice cream van for a classic 99 Flake. Instead, most days after school were spent at home doing homework, without actively making plans.

Connecting with others was challenging, given the diverse origins of individuals and the considerable travel times between locations. Coming from a smaller community, forming friendships and spending time together was notably simpler. Even now, at 25, I can still relate to that experience.

Despite the differences, my teenage years in the UK were enriching, filled with fond memories that I hold dear. Reflecting on my life in Spain, I often ponder how things might have unfolded if my parents had not made such a drastic choice.

Ultimately, the unknowns remain, but I hold no regrets about the path taken.
